Administrative Review Tribunal announces its review of the Privacy Commissioners findings on Bunnings use of Facial Recognition Technology at their retail stores

The Review Tribunal released its findings on the 4th February 2026 and found that in summary,

‘Bunnings was entitled to use FRT for the limited purpose of combatting very significant retail crime and protecting their staff and customers from violence, abuse and intimidation within its stores’

While there were other areas coverings notification and management of personal information where Bunnings did not comply, we expect that this finding will help open up the path for retailers to use FRT to combat violence against staff.
